Frequently Asked Questions
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
Anyone motivated to learn about self, identify goals, build action plans and make progress toward their goals to create positive and lasting change in their life.
Coaching is not therapy and does not substitute therapy. Coaching does not prevent, cure, or treat any mental disorder or medical disease. Furthermore, coaching does not involve the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders as defined by the American Psychiatric Association and is not to be used as a substitute for counseling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, or other professional advice by legal, medical or other qualified professionals.
It is the Client’s exclusive responsibility to seek such independent professional guidance as needed. If the Client is currently under the care of a mental health professional, it is recommended that the Client promptly inform the mental health care provider of the nature and extent of the coaching relationship agreed upon by the Client and the Coach to ensure coaching is appropriate for the Client to engage in.
The International Coach Federation (ICF) has identified three credential paths for coaching.
A coach guides self-reflection driven by the client, and is responsible for:
- Discovering, clarifying and aligning with what the client wants to achieve.
- Encouraging client self-discovery.
- Eliciting client-generated solutions and strategies.
- Holding the client responsible and accountable.
A consultant provides expert advice and proposes solutions to problems.
